CM KCR & KTR’s home turfs win awards for sanitation

Secunderabad Cantonment won the ‘best city in citizen feedback’ category. Four ULBs — Husnabad, Kompalli, Adibatla and Vemulawada — walked away with awards in 15,000-25,000 population category. Turkayamjal, Korutla and Sircilla too won awards in the Azaadi @75 in the 25,000-50,000 population category.

Chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao’s assembly constituency of Gajwel, which is a municipality, and municipal administration minister KT Rama Rao’s constituency of Sircilla also won awards in the national sanitation challenge. Alampur, Peerzadiguda and Korutla bagged ISL awards.

Senior municipal administration officials said these ULBs, despite witnessing rapid growth in the last few years, were successful in implementing the best sanitation practices and the awards only vindicated the government’s resolve.

A senior official said the state government’s Pattana Pragati programme, which was conducted in four phases from February 2020 to 2022, had paid the dividends with focus on sanitation and garbage-free towns.

Priority was given to sanitation, solid waste management, Haritha Haram, nurseries at the ward level, development of central medians, construction of Vaikunthadhamams (graveyards) and vegetarian-non-vegetarian markets, besides repairs to electric poles, he explained.

“Telangana is in the forefront in planning and setting up composting units, dry resource collection centres (DRCCs), biomining of legacy waste and faecal sludge treatment plants (FSTPs) for waste management in urban areas. With these initiatives, the state has started its journey towards ODF++ and GFC certifications,” N Satyanarayana, director of municipal administration, said.
